North West

The North West is an expanse of breathtaking scenery spread across more than a million kms of the state. Experience the contrast between the harsh red deserts and the crystal turquoise waterfalls and pools. From the huge rolling formations of the Bungle Bungles to the flat sands of 80 Mile Beach, the North West is home to extremes not found anywhere else in the country.                                                                    

         Cable Beach, Broome      

The North West experiences two seasons, summer and winter. November to April is summer with hot days and balmy nights. The summer months are prone to short, heavy rains which can often flood roads and temperatures can also easily exceed 40 degrees so traveling in these months is not ideal for those not used to a hot climate. May to November is winter which is the ideal time to visit for the days are pleasant with temperatures in the mid 20's. However in these months the temperature at night in the desert can plumet to near freezing. The North West is truly a climate of extremes.                                                                            

 Karijini

The region is best known for the beaches of Broome, Purnululu National Park home of the Bungles Bungles and the magnificent Karijini National Park. Karijini is a breathtaking landscape two billion years in the making. Deep gorges, crystal pools and unforgettable waterfalls form this oasis in the middle of the desert. Purnululu National Park is a world heritage site and home to the orange and black striped domes called the Bungle Bungles. A spectacular experience whether you explore by foot or air. Cable Beach in Broome has been voted one of the best beaches in the world and you'll understand why. Year round sun and 22 kms of perfect white sand has to be seen to be believed. Experience the beach at its best with a sunset camel ride.         

 Gantheaume Point, Broome

For a truly outback experience take a trip along Gibb River Road. This 660 km stretch of road  takes you deep into the heart of the Kimberly. Another unique feature of the North West is Burrup Peninsula which is home to one of Australia's most incredible Aborigional rock art sites. The Area is believed to be made up of millions of carvings, paintings and artifacts making it the largest collection of rock art in the world. The Impressive Boab Prison Tree is located in the town of Derby and is thought to be at least 1,500 years old. An impressive 14 meters in diameter with a hollow centre it was once used by police as a patrol station as prisoners were being marched into Derby. Just out of Broome at Gantheoume Point is another historic site. Dinosaur footprints from the Cretaceous age thought to be 130 million years old can be viewed at low tide.

     Cable Beach, Broome

 A huge part of the history in the North West is the Pearl Industry in Broome. Origionally pearling was done by Aborigional people however it has evolved into a thriving industry and by 1910 more than 3500 people were pearl diving out of the area. The majority of workers were Japanese and Malaysian and the influence of these cultures on Broome has become part of its history. The town is home to several significant sites such as the Japanese cemetary which is the resting place of more than 900 workers who lost their lives whilst diving for pearls.
